Meanwhile, the governor’s Facebook post announcing the design on November 22 received comments criticizing the design’s lack of originality When asked about the plate being draped in colors used by the University of Missouri, Johnson responded in an email, “Technically the colors were navy and yellow with black digits (not Mizzou colors) but on social media, everything looked black.” One major complaint is the colors of the design- wheat-yellow colored background with black and dark blue text- were too similar to the color scheme of the University of Missouri, a rival to the University of Kansas, according to governor spokesperson Brianna Johnson. “Elected officials should be responsive to their constituents, which is why we are adjusting the process so Kansans can provide direct input on our state’s next license plate.” “I’ve heard you loud and clear,” Kansas Gov. Kansas is going back to the drawing board after hundreds of people blasted the state’s new license plate design for next year, with many saying it resembled those of other states and a rival state university from neighboring Missouri. ![]() Align titles both horizontally and vertically to maintain balance and readability. ![]() Pay Attention to AlignmentĮnsure that your titles are properly aligned within the frame. Julian is the little brother of actress Stella Edwards (she plays Lois on Nobodies, among other things). The tiny tots who hold their own alongside Bullock (and other mega stars like Sarah Paulson and John Malkovich) in Bird Box are named Julian Edwards and Vivien Lyra Blair. Adapted from the 2014 novel by Josh Malerman, Bird Box has an all-star cast from Sandra Bullock to the two breakout child actors who play Bullock's kids in the terrifying movie. Such is the case with the new Netflix film, Bird Box. If the typical rom-com isn't your bag, post-apocalyptic thriller might give you the warm and fuzzy feelings. Yet as the 280 million+ people around the world who are classed as having 'low-vision' or 'blind' already know' - if you have the will there is life to be had, sighted or not.The holidays are the best time for highly anticipated movie releases. This is an excellent film in a theater or at home, with a story that will touch at a core vulnerability that makes many of us uncomfortable. As is fitting a film who's protagonists are reliant on a life without vision, it is not full of bombastic CGI action sequences and instead wraps itself in a sense of horror that I found both terrifying and refreshing. It simply layers on another level of dread as the film proceeds towards it's conclusion. The way the film is split over different time periods is not a clever gimmick as has been the case with so much output over the last few years. With a run-time of just under 2 hours the film does enough and manages to intertwine these themes with the base horror and makes you care enough to take the journey through the fear with Sandra Bullock's Malorie and the rest of the cast who perform admirably. As you watch and come to understand (although not fully) the mechanics of the horror that is the basis of this post apocalyptic tale you find yourself wondering what would you do in a world where your eyes are your greatest weakness? Yes, perhaps more could have been done to fill out the concepts of family, parenthood, and connecting. In many ways this film is all the more terrifying because of society's reliance on seeing the world around them. The source material 'Bird Box' written by Josh Malerman was published in 2014. Much has been said about how this is a 'blind' version of 'A Quiet Place' - it is most definitely not. For a world which has become so sight-orientated there are times when the sense of dread you feel whilst watching Bird Box is almost incapacitating. ![]() Currently, it has well over 1 billion installs across Android and iOS, a number that has increased. The company is not quick to disclose exact monthly active user figures, but in 2016, Viber was widely reported to have 823 million users (note: not active users - one citation of this number from its PR firm here) in that same year, an exec told TechCrunch that it had 266 million monthly active users. It’s also a number that - as those other apps have grown in prominence - has not drastically changed. Viber’s move to launch Payments comes at an interesting time.Įyal told me that Viber has “in the neighborhood” of 250 million monthly active users - a number that is significantly smaller than other messaging-first apps like WhatsApp and WeChat, whose active users number in the billions. Viber is not handing the whole operation to Rapyd: it will be providing tech and data to fill out “KYC” aspects of the service. Viber might also incorporate services from Rakuten itself or companies that Rakuten does invest in as Payments and Viber’s fintech ambitions overall expand, he added. He also noted that Rakuten is not investing in Rapyd, nor does it have plans to. Eyal noted that Viber might work with Rapyd in other markets, too, or it might opt for other partners. Rapyd, the “fintech-as-a-service” startup that provides a wide variety of embedded financial services by way of APIs to a host of other companies, is powering Payments in the two initial launch countries. But interestingly, this turn to fintech is being done in partnership with an outside partner. ![]() Viber has a large team of engineers working on its app - in addition to voice and video calls and text messaging, it provides a complement of other media and third-party integrations for users. ![]() To date, these have facilitated “millions” of transfers, but as Payments expands, they will gradually be wound down, with Payments functionality replacing them. Viber also happened to win a security award there recently, he said, “so brand perception is strong.”įor now, Viber’s pre-existing payment services - such as chatbot payments - will continue to stay in place where they are live, mainly Ukraine, Bulgaria and Hungary, Eyal said. Germany, meanwhile, has just 3 million Viber users, but Eyal described it as a “strong corridor” for transfers to Greece. Greece is what he described as a “purple country,” where Viber is installed on the phones of some 91% of smartphone users in the country, working out to 7 million Viber users in a population of 10.7 million, and making P2P transfer more viable (there is an option to transfer money to non-Viber users, but it is less seamless, he said). Viber CEO Ofir Eyal said the reasons for starting with these two countries first were strategic. The service is being launched first in two markets - Germany and Greece - with the plan being to extend that to the rest of Europe, and then Viber’s wider global footprint of 180 countries, this year and next. Services like payments to businesses likely will have some fees attached. Peer-to-peer transfers will be the first of these services to launch, and these will be free. Linked to other bank accounts as well as Visa and Mastercard, Payments wallets can in turn be used to make bill payments and buy goods, as well as transfer money to other individuals. Now it is making a move to double down on that strategy: it’s launching Payments on Viber - a new service that will let users set up digital wallets tied to their Viber accounts. Viber, the messaging app owned by Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten, has long been dancing around the area of fintech, launching services like money transfer and chatbot payments in various countries over the years. |
